European Parliament urges the Commission to plan a new gender equality strategy

Jeudi, 4 Février 2016

On Wednesday 3rd February, the European parliament voted a resolution by 337 votes to 286 and 73 abstentions to urge the European Commission to deliver as soon as possible a new gender equality strategy for the period 2016-2020.

The European Commission did not take yet any officials measures for gender equality for the period 2016-2020. While the European Parliament had already asked for a strategy in June 2015, the Comission only presented a staff working document for the period 2016-2019.

This was not enough for MEPs since this document did not allow any specific budget and concretes measures. Thus MEPs are now urging the Commission to launch a real gender equality strategy. Gender equality being an objective of the European Union, it is therefore the role of the European Commission to agree on measures to make it possible.
