Anti-Islamic group: Pegida wants a leader

Thursday, 18 June 2015

Pegida, Germany's populist anti-immigration movement, recently generated concern in Europe because of its growing influence.

Last December thousands of people hit the streets of Dresden to join the Pegida's protests against the supposed threat of an influx of Muslim migrants. The mouvement has slightly diminished since, however the group has still the ability of making news coverage. Pegida is now looking for a political leader and is taking the example the Indian Prime Minister Modi known for his non-intervention during anti-muslim riots in India. Even if Pegida has struggled with scandal and infighting in recent months, the group clearly retains some support: Festerling gaines almost 10% of the vote in the first round of Dresden's mayoral race, though she later dropped out.
