PLS joins the new European Alliance for a Just Transition

Tuesday, 12 October 2021

Twenty-five European civil society organisations - including networks and movements working on social, environmental, climate and political issues - have come together under the banner of the European Alliance for a Just Transition, calling for immediate, unequivocal and transformative action at all levels of society to build a secure and sustainable future for all. POUR LA SOLIDARITÉ-PLS joins the movement and highlights the role played by Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) actors for an inclusive transition.

At the launch event of the European Alliance for a Just Transition, which took place online on 28 September 2021, Denis Stokkink, President of PLS, said: "Pour la Solidarité has chosen to join an alliance to bring together solidarity actors for a united, just and inclusive Europe. This alliance brings together all the actors to be a driving force, so that tomorrow's future will be better, fairer and more inclusive".

POUR LA SOLIDARITÉ-PLS welcomed the fact that through Green Deal, Europe had finally embarked on a fair and inclusive transition. But for this transition to be truly inclusive, a whole range of actors must be involved. "The urgency calls for action, action in solidarity that engages everyone at the economic, social and environmental levels", declared Denis Stokkink.

It is precisely this urgency that prompted the international SOLIDAR network, earlier this year, to bring together an informal group of organisations sharing a common vision for a transition to climate-neutral, just and equitable societies that benefit all. Through the Alliance for a Just Transition, stakeholders share the conviction that climate action and social justice go hand in hand.

This commitment includes reshaping our economies, creating a new world of work, local planning and action, tackling inequality, mainstreaming just transition into policy, recognising the role of education in transition, global climate justice, using human rights frameworks and science. To achieve a truly just transition, we commit to work together, sparing no effort or energy, until the sustainable transformation is won, leaving no one behind. Among the actors of this commitment, PLS highlights the actors of the Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) that bring together an economic, social and environmental vision.

In this joint statement, the co-signatories call on "on civil society organisations, political movements, and other like-minded actors at all levels to gather in Alliances that demand a Just Transition, as only by working together will we ensure that the transition to a climate-neutral Europe will lead to fairer, more resilient, sustainable, and prosperous societies."
