Immigration: social networks to find smugglers?

Friday, 4 September 2015

Migrants use social networks as their compass from the Middle East to Europe.

Social media and other smartphone applications, that were vital tools for social uprisings like the Arab Spring, are now endless resources for migrants trying to reach Europe. Refugees can find all the information they need to know from the prices, fees, bribes they will have to pay to the details on the best places to cross borders. Social media have the power to help activists to mobilise protests against abusive rulers in countries such as Egypt, but they are also business plateforms for smugglers that are taking advantage of people's despair to make money risking refugees lives without any concern.
