Gender: Colombia's new femicide law to fight gender violences

Tuesday, 25 August 2015

Colombia's new "femicide" law is a key step to fight violence against women.

In Colombia, one woman is killed every two days, the issue of femicide - defined as the killing of a woman by a man because of her gender - is under the spotlight. Now that gender violences are legally and distinctively recognized as crimes, the challenge is the enforcement of the law and ensuring that police, prosecutors and forensic experts are trained to identify and investigate cases of femicide. The biggest challenge in this country with a macho culture, and a lack of awareness among women about their rights, is to push this culture and its beliefes to evolve towards women empowerment. This law is a major step for Colombia towards awareness about gender violences and its fight.
