The danger of being LGBT in Russia

Tuesday, 14 July 2015

What happens when two young men in their 20s walk around the center of Moscow holding hands?

The video, shot by the group ChebuRussiaTV, aims to show how tolerant Russia is of homosexuality, in the wake of the Supreme Court decision that effectively legalized gay marriage across the United States. During the video, the two young man have been violently insulted and even physically attacked. Homosexuality is not illegal in Russia, but LGBT communities have complained of increasing harassment in recent years, and the law against "homosexual propaganda" is a particular source of concern. At least this video, viewed almost 1.4 million times since being posted Sunday, sparked a critical debate about their own society.
