Women in Parliaments

The European Parliament's Think Tank published an infographic on representation of women in national parliaments and the EP. At European level, one MEP in three is a woman.

Belgium is one of the six EU member states exceeding this rate in their national parliaments. However, only 28.6% of the Belgian MEPs are women.

The infographics also compare the share of women in the respective EP political groups: with 51.9% the leftist GUE/NGL group has the highest share of women, followed by the S&D group and the Greens/EFA. In the European Conservatives and Reformists group, only 22.5% of MEPs are women.

The overall tendency is positive, the share of women having increased considerably not only in the European parliament but also in the member states' national parliaments over the last 20 years.
