A guide for LGBTI asylum seekers

June 2015

Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation published a guide for the people seeking asylum based on their sexual orientation, gender indentity or intersex grounds.

According to the United Nations, 77 countries currently criminalise people because of their sexual orientation. Many flee these threats to their life and ask for asylum in states where they will be protected against homophobic and transphobic agressions. However, the difficulties do not stop once arrived in the host country as the criterions for acquiring asylum are particulalry rigorous. Indeed, people seeking asylum have to prove that they are persecuted because of their sexual orientation, and the administrations granting asylum use very intrusive methods to verify the veracity of their statements. As an answer to this the Australian organisation Kaleidoscope Australia Human Rights Foundation published a guide for the people seeking asylum based on their sexual orientation, gender indentity or intersex grounds. This guide will help the LGBTI to assert their rights on an international scale and obtain respect of their dignity.
